Bungalow Reconfiguration and Garden Access, Edinburgh
This project involved the complete internal remodelling of a traditional Edinburgh bungalow to better suit the needs of a modern family. By rethinking the original layout, we were able to open up the back of the house, creating a much more practical and connected living space.
Opening Up the Living Space
The main goal was to move away from the original, smaller rooms and create a single open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area. By removing the internal walls that previously separated these spaces, the room now feels much brighter and serves as the main hub of the home.
To improve the connection to the garden, we installed large format sliding patio doors. These provide a clear view out and make it much easier to move between the kitchen and the new outdoor seating area.
A Practical Garden Connection
Because the house sits at a higher level than the garden, we designed a raised timber deck and staircase to bridge the gap. This adds a useful level platform for outdoor dining and simplifies the access down to the lawn.
-
Durable Materials: We chose composite decking for the surface. It’s a hard-wearing, low-maintenance option that stands up well to the local climate compared to traditional timber.
-
Safety and Views: The deck is finished with a glazed balustrade. Using glass instead of a solid rail keeps the view of the garden open while providing the necessary safety and wind protection.
-
Integrated Storage: To make the most of the site, we used timber-slatted cladding around the base of the deck, which also allows for some discreet storage underneath.
